Quilted, Not Smooth, and That's the Point

Colocasia Suksathid #1 and #2 come off the same line, and the one difference that actually separates them is texture. #1's leaves carry a deep, three dimensional quilting between the veins, each segment puckered and embossed rather than lying flat, with a heavily waved margin running the whole way around the blade. #2's foliage is smoother by comparison. If you're deciding between the two numbered selections, surface texture is the trait to look at, not color, which varies leaf to leaf on both.

The Draw Beyond the Numbered Name

The near-black portions of the leaf carry a metallic sheen, the pink or green portions stay matte by comparison, and depending on which leaf you're looking at, that split can run clean down the midrib or scatter into a mottled mix of dark green, burgundy, and hot pink. That variability, layered on top of the quilted texture above, means no two leaves on the plant look quite alike, which is exactly what keeps collectors watching a plant like this rather than a single fixed pattern.

An Unverified Name, a Verified Genus

"Suksathid" isn't a name that turns up in botanical literature or recognized cultivar registries. It reads as a grower or nursery name attached locally within Thailand's collector trade, the same way many numbered Colocasia selections in this catalog are, and there's no documented breeding history to point to beyond that. What is verified: this is a cultivar of Colocasia esculenta, the same species grown across Southeast Asia as taro and worldwide as an ornamental elephant ear, in the arum family Araceae alongside Alocasia and Philodendron. Its size, leaf shape, and vigorous clumping growth habit all track with the species; the color and texture are what a selection like this is chosen for.

What Keeps the Ripple Sharp

Give it bright, indirect light. Colocasia in general holds its color and texture better with strong light exposure; too little and leaves tend to flatten out and lose some of that dimensional quilting over time. Keep the soil consistently moist, never fully dry, and expect vigorous growth in warm, humid conditions during the growing season. It dies back in cooler weather and regrows from the bulb the following season, which is normal for the genus, not a sign of a struggling plant.

How This One Ships

Ships as a fresh cutting with bulb and petiole, about 20 to 30cm, the bulb wrapped in moist sphagnum moss for the trip. It reestablishes and produces new leaves from the bulb after planting rather than arriving already leafed out, so the first leaf you see from it will be its own expression of the pattern described above.

Shipping

We ship our plants with free Phytosanitary Certificate via the national postal services, Dragon Courier and courier companies such as DHL and UPS. Some countries require an import permit.

Please refer to our Delivery & Packaging page for more details. We do not ship on public holidays in the Kingdom of Thailand.

Packaging

We ship our tissue culture plants in foam box lined with insulating material to minimize thermal shock.

Live plants are shipped in carton boxes with ventilation holes to prevent excessive moisture from building inside the parcel.

Please refer to our Delivery & Packaging page for more details. We do not recommend importing live plants if your area experiences temperature below -5 degree Celsius.

Disclaimer

Our photos are representative examples of the plants we offer. You will receive a healthy plant of similar size and quality unless the product description clearly states that the listing is for the exact plant shown.

For selected products, actual photos of the individual plant are provided. These listings will be clearly identified, and you will receive the exact plant pictured. The date the photos were taken will also be stated. If the photos are older, you are welcome to contact us to request updated images before purchasing.

Decorative pots and accessories shown in product photos are for display purposes only and are not included unless otherwise stated.

As our plants are living products, natural variation should be expected. Differences in size, leaf count, coloration, variegation, veining, and growth habit may occur depending on the season, age of the plant, environmental conditions, and normal biological variation. These natural differences are not considered defects and are not grounds for complaints, returns, or refunds.

All sales are final once plants have been shipped. Refunds or replacements for plants that arrive dead on arrival (DOA) are available only when the conditions outlined in our Returns, Refunds & Replacement Policy have been met. Please refer to that policy for full details.

  • Light

Colocasias thrive in bright light and can tolerate several hours of direct morning or late afternoon sun. In cooler climates, full sun encourages vigorous growth and larger leaves, while in hotter regions, light afternoon shade helps prevent leaf scorch. For light colored variegation varieties, they thrive in partial shade and harsh direct sunlight may burn the leaves.

  • Temperature

Ideal temperatures range from 20–32°C (68–90°F). Growth slows significantly below 15°C (59°F), and frost can damage or kill the foliage. In cooler climates, tubers can be lifted and stored over winter.

  • Water

Colocasias are moisture-loving plants that perform best in consistently damp soil. Unlike many aroids, they tolerate wet conditions exceptionally well and can even be grown in shallow water or along pond edges. Never allow the potting mix to dry out completely during the growing season.

  • Humidity

Although Colocasias appreciate high humidity, they are more adaptable than many tropical plants. A humidity level of 50–80% encourages lush, healthy foliage, but established plants generally tolerate average household humidity.

  • Potting Mix

Use a rich, moisture-retentive yet well-aerated potting mix. A blend containing coco coir or peat moss, compost, perlite, and pine bark provides excellent drainage while retaining the moisture Colocasias prefer. Ensure that your coco based products are free from tannin.

  • Fertilizer

Colocasias are heavy feeders during active growth. Apply a balanced liquid fertilizer every 2–3 weeks, or use slow-release 16-16-16 Osmocote according to the manufacturer's instructions to support continuous production of large, vibrant leaves.
