Cream Veins Scattered Like Stars on a Dark Leaf

Colocasia Stardust earns its name honestly. Cream-yellow veins radiate out from a bright pink center point on a deep blue-green to near-black leaf, each vein edged in pink where it meets the darker blade, scattered across the surface the way points of light sit against a night sky. It's a consistent structure across every leaf shown in this plant's own photos, the same radiating vein pattern repeating from leaf to leaf rather than shifting the way color does on many other Colocasia in this catalog.

A Colocasia Built for Close-Up Viewing

"Stardust" isn't a documented cultivar with a traceable breeding history, the same as most named Colocasia selections coming out of Thailand's collector trade; what's verified is the species underneath it, Colocasia esculenta. The appeal here is less about rarity claims and more about how the leaf rewards a close look: the fine cream veining only really reads once you're standing in front of the plant rather than glancing at it from across a room, which makes it a natural centerpiece for a bed or bench where people actually stop to look.

Light and Water, Kept Consistent

Give it bright, indirect light to keep the vein contrast sharp; too little light lets the dark background fade toward plain green and dulls the cream veining along with it. Keep the soil consistently moist, never fully dry, and expect the strong, warm-season growth typical of the genus, along with real humidity and warmth through the growing season. Like other Colocasia, it dies back in cooler weather and regrows from the bulb the following season.

From Bulb to First Full Leaf

Ships as a fresh cutting with bulb and petiole, about 20 to 30cm, the bulb wrapped in moist sphagnum moss for the trip. It reestablishes and produces new leaves from the bulb after planting, and given how consistent the vein pattern is across this plant's own photos, the first full leaf it produces should carry the same radiating structure shown here.

Plant Care

  • Light

    Colocasias thrive in bright light and can tolerate several hours of direct morning or late afternoon sun. In cooler climates, full sun encourages vigorous growth and larger leaves, while in hotter regions, light afternoon shade helps prevent leaf scorch. For light colored variegation varieties, they thrive in partial shade and harsh direct sunlight may burn the leaves.

  • Temperature

    Ideal temperatures range from 20–32°C (68–90°F). Growth slows significantly below 15°C (59°F), and frost can damage or kill the foliage. In cooler climates, tubers can be lifted and stored over winter.

  • Water

    Colocasias are moisture-loving plants that perform best in consistently damp soil. Unlike many aroids, they tolerate wet conditions exceptionally well and can even be grown in shallow water or along pond edges. Never allow the potting mix to dry out completely during the growing season.

  • Humidity

    Although Colocasias appreciate high humidity, they are more adaptable than many tropical plants. A humidity level of 50–80% encourages lush, healthy foliage, but established plants generally tolerate average household humidity.

  • Potting Mix

    Use a rich, moisture-retentive yet well-aerated potting mix. A blend containing coco coir or peat moss, compost, perlite, and pine bark provides excellent drainage while retaining the moisture Colocasias prefer. Ensure that your coco based products are free from tannin.

  • Fertilizer

    Colocasias are heavy feeders during active growth. Apply a balanced liquid fertilizer every 2–3 weeks, or use slow-release 16-16-16 Osmocote according to the manufacturer's instructions to support continuous production of large, vibrant leaves.
