Hold two leaves from the same Colocasia Rainbow Butterfly plant side by side and they can look like they belong to different cultivars. One glows rose-pink from its base outward, tracing the veins in a warm blaze against deep green. The next, on the very same plant, runs the same blaze in pale gold instead. Both spread from the same wing-shaped blade that gives this Colocasia its name, and no two leaves settle on quite the same shade.

Each Leaf Its Own Wing, Never Quite the Same Colour Twice

Colocasia leaves are already shaped like broad, pointed wings, and on Rainbow Butterfly that resemblance becomes the whole point. Individual leaves range from a deep rose-pink blaze radiating out from the petiole junction to a softer pale-gold or near-white version of the same pattern, sometimes on leaves growing right next to each other. It's the kind of variability that rewards watching the plant over time rather than judging it from a single photo, since a new leaf may lean pink where the last one leaned gold.

A Blaze That Follows the Veins, Not the Edges

What stays constant, even as the colour shifts, is the structure: pigment concentrated along the primary veins radiating out from the leaf's base, fading into solid green toward the margins rather than forming a clean sectoral split or an even edge band. That vein-led pattern is what actually identifies this cultivar leaf to leaf, more reliably than any single colour would be.

No Verified History, But a Consistent Structure

Rainbow Butterfly is a trade name used in the Colocasia collector market, and no breeding record or registered origin for it turns up in the botanical literature available to us. We treat that honestly rather than inventing a backstory: what can be verified is the genus itself, Colocasia esculenta, a herbaceous perennial aroid native to tropical Asia and long cultivated as both a food crop and an ornamental. The structural blaze pattern described above is confirmed directly against this plant's own photographs, even though the cultivar's exact history isn't.

Light Decides How Bold Each Leaf Turns Out

Strong, bright light (filtered or dappled rather than harsh midday sun) is what pushes the blaze toward its most saturated colour, whether that turns out pink or gold on a given leaf. In lower light, new leaves tend to stay greener with a fainter blaze. Consistent moisture and a well-draining, fertile soil round out what this plant needs; it isn't a fussy grower, just one that rewards good light with more colour to show for it.

What Arrives, and How It Settles In

This plant ships as a fresh cutting, bulb and petiole intact and wrapped in moist sphagnum moss, with the leaves removed for transit rather than the full leafed plant shown in these photos. Expect the bulb to need a few weeks to root and push its first new leaf once potted, at which point you'll start to see for yourself which colour this particular leaf decides to run.

Add Colocasia Rainbow Butterfly to your collection for a plant that keeps its own variety going leaf after leaf, grown and shipped from ThaiFusion Botanica in Thailand.

We ship our plants with free Phytosanitary Certificate via the national postal services, Dragon Courier and courier companies such as DHL and UPS. Some countries require an import permit.

Please refer to our Delivery & Packaging page for more details. We do not ship on public holidays in the Kingdom of Thailand.

Packaging

We ship our tissue culture plants in foam box lined with insulating material to minimize thermal shock.

Live plants are shipped in carton boxes with ventilation holes to prevent excessive moisture from building inside the parcel.

Please refer to our Delivery & Packaging page for more details. We do not recommend importing live plants if your area experiences temperature below -5 degree Celsius.

Disclaimer

Our photos are representative examples of the plants we offer. You will receive a healthy plant of similar size and quality unless the product description clearly states that the listing is for the exact plant shown.

For selected products, actual photos of the individual plant are provided. These listings will be clearly identified, and you will receive the exact plant pictured. The date the photos were taken will also be stated. If the photos are older, you are welcome to contact us to request updated images before purchasing.

Decorative pots and accessories shown in product photos are for display purposes only and are not included unless otherwise stated.

As our plants are living products, natural variation should be expected. Differences in size, leaf count, coloration, variegation, veining, and growth habit may occur depending on the season, age of the plant, environmental conditions, and normal biological variation. These natural differences are not considered defects and are not grounds for complaints, returns, or refunds.

All sales are final once plants have been shipped. Refunds or replacements for plants that arrive dead on arrival (DOA) are available only when the conditions outlined in our Returns, Refunds & Replacement Policy have been met. Please refer to that policy for full details.

  • Light

Colocasias thrive in bright light and can tolerate several hours of direct morning or late afternoon sun. In cooler climates, full sun encourages vigorous growth and larger leaves, while in hotter regions, light afternoon shade helps prevent leaf scorch. For light colored variegation varieties, they thrive in partial shade and harsh direct sunlight may burn the leaves.

  • Temperature

Ideal temperatures range from 20–32°C (68–90°F). Growth slows significantly below 15°C (59°F), and frost can damage or kill the foliage. In cooler climates, tubers can be lifted and stored over winter.

  • Water

Colocasias are moisture-loving plants that perform best in consistently damp soil. Unlike many aroids, they tolerate wet conditions exceptionally well and can even be grown in shallow water or along pond edges. Never allow the potting mix to dry out completely during the growing season.

  • Humidity

Although Colocasias appreciate high humidity, they are more adaptable than many tropical plants. A humidity level of 50–80% encourages lush, healthy foliage, but established plants generally tolerate average household humidity.

  • Potting Mix

Use a rich, moisture-retentive yet well-aerated potting mix. A blend containing coco coir or peat moss, compost, perlite, and pine bark provides excellent drainage while retaining the moisture Colocasias prefer. Ensure that your coco based products are free from tannin.

  • Fertilizer

Colocasias are heavy feeders during active growth. Apply a balanced liquid fertilizer every 2–3 weeks, or use slow-release 16-16-16 Osmocote according to the manufacturer's instructions to support continuous production of large, vibrant leaves.
