A Leaf Lit From Within
The first thing you notice about Colocasia Ghost Rider is the contrast. Each blade reads as near black at a glance, but look closer and it's threaded end to end with veins in a hot pink to deep red, running from the petiole out to a softly ruffled leaf edge. The effect is almost architectural, like the leaf is wired from the inside rather than simply colored. It's a large, arrowhead-shaped leaf typical of the genus, and the scale of it means this plant reads as a statement piece in a garden bed or on a patio, not a small tabletop curiosity.
Why Collectors Seek It Out
Dark-leafed Colocasia hybrids are common enough in the trade, but most lean toward mottling, marbling, or a uniform near-black blade. Ghost Rider's vein pattern is the distinguishing trait here: the contrast between the near-black tissue and the glowing pink venation stays sharp rather than blending into a muddy mix, which is what gives it presence from a distance as well as up close. For growers building an outdoor tropical bed, it's a plant that pulls the eye without needing to be enormous or in bloom to do it.
Botanical Background
Most ornamental Colocasia hybrids in cultivation, including Thai-bred selections like this one, trace back to Colocasia esculenta and its many cultivated forms, a species native to the wetlands, marshes, and grasslands of eastern Asia. The genus sits in the arum family, Araceae. One detail worth knowing if you're new to the genus: Colocasia leaves are peltate, meaning the petiole attaches to the underside of the blade rather than to its edge. You can see this clearly in the photograph, where the veins converge to a point set back from the leaf margin rather than at a corner. The plant grows from a corm, producing slender stolons and offshoot corms as it spreads, which is exactly why it's sold here as a fresh cutting with an intact bulb rather than a tissue-cultured plantlet. As with any trade-named hybrid, it's worth being direct: Ghost Rider is a selection name used in the Thai nursery trade rather than a formally registered cultivar, so what's verified here is the species-level biology above and the coloration visible in the photograph.
Growing Conditions
Colocasia esculenta is a marsh-adapted species, so it tolerates and often prefers consistently moist to boggy soil, more forgiving of overwatering than most houseplants. Give it bright light to full sun; the dark pigmentation in leaves like this one actually develops more richly with stronger light than a pale variegate could tolerate. Keep it warm, ideally 20 to 30°C, and expect it to slow down or go dormant if temperatures drop for an extended period, which is normal corm behavior rather than a sign of a problem.
Bring It Home
Add Colocasia Ghost Rider to an outdoor tropical planting or a large container where its scale and vein pattern can do the work, or let it anchor a new one. ThaiFusion Botanica propagates and ships this variety directly from our nursery in Thailand, with a phytosanitary certificate included on every international order.

Our photos are representative examples of the plants we offer. You will receive a healthy plant of similar size and quality unless the product description clearly states that the listing is for the exact plant shown.
For selected products, actual photos of the individual plant are provided. These listings will be clearly identified, and you will receive the exact plant pictured. The date the photos were taken will also be stated. If the photos are older, you are welcome to contact us to request updated images before purchasing.
Decorative pots and accessories shown in product photos are for display purposes only and are not included unless otherwise stated.
As our plants are living products, natural variation should be expected. Differences in size, leaf count, coloration, variegation, veining, and growth habit may occur depending on the season, age of the plant, environmental conditions, and normal biological variation. These natural differences are not considered defects and are not grounds for complaints, returns, or refunds.
All sales are final once plants have been shipped. Refunds or replacements for plants that arrive dead on arrival (DOA) are available only when the conditions outlined in our Returns, Refunds & Replacement Policy have been met. Please refer to that policy for full details.

Plant Care
-
Light
Colocasias thrive in bright light and can tolerate several hours of direct morning or late afternoon sun. In cooler climates, full sun encourages vigorous growth and larger leaves, while in hotter regions, light afternoon shade helps prevent leaf scorch. For light colored variegation varieties, they thrive in partial shade and harsh direct sunlight may burn the leaves.
-
Temperature
Ideal temperatures range from 20–32°C (68–90°F). Growth slows significantly below 15°C (59°F), and frost can damage or kill the foliage. In cooler climates, tubers can be lifted and stored over winter.
-
Water
Colocasias are moisture-loving plants that perform best in consistently damp soil. Unlike many aroids, they tolerate wet conditions exceptionally well and can even be grown in shallow water or along pond edges. Never allow the potting mix to dry out completely during the growing season.
-
Humidity
Although Colocasias appreciate high humidity, they are more adaptable than many tropical plants. A humidity level of 50–80% encourages lush, healthy foliage, but established plants generally tolerate average household humidity.
-
Potting Mix
Use a rich, moisture-retentive yet well-aerated potting mix. A blend containing coco coir or peat moss, compost, perlite, and pine bark provides excellent drainage while retaining the moisture Colocasias prefer. Ensure that your coco based products are free from tannin.
-
Fertilizer
Colocasias are heavy feeders during active growth. Apply a balanced liquid fertilizer every 2–3 weeks, or use slow-release 16-16-16 Osmocote according to the manufacturer's instructions to support continuous production of large, vibrant leaves.
