Few foliage plants command attention quite like Colocasia Fuchsia Pink. A variegated form of the celebrated 'Pharaoh's Mask', this remarkable elephant ear combines dramatic texture with vivid splashes of pink that transform every leaf into a living work of art. Deep green foliage is irregularly marbled with bright fuchsia-pink variegation, while the strongly raised veins create a sculptural, almost quilted appearance that adds depth and character from every angle. Whether displayed as a feature plant indoors or as part of a lush tropical garden, its bold architectural form leaves a lasting impression.
Why Collectors Love It
Collectors value Colocasia Fuchsia Pink for the same qualities that made 'Pharaoh's Mask' highly sought after, enhanced by the addition of striking pink variegation. The heavily textured leaves possess a three-dimensional quality rarely found in ornamental foliage plants, giving the plant visual interest even when viewed from a distance. As each new leaf unfurls, the variegation develops in its own distinctive pattern, ensuring that no two leaves appear exactly alike.
Its upright habit, vibrant colour contrast, and impressive foliage make it an outstanding specimen for collectors seeking something beyond conventional elephant ear plants. Equally suited to decorative containers, tropical landscapes, or spacious indoor growing areas, it offers year-round ornamental appeal wherever warm conditions can be provided.
Botanical Background
Colocasia belongs to the Araceae family, which also includes familiar ornamental genera such as Alocasia, Philodendron, and Anthurium. Most cultivated elephant ear varieties are derived from Colocasia esculenta, a species native to tropical and subtropical regions of Asia where it naturally grows in warm, moisture-rich environments, including riverbanks, wetlands, and forest margins.
The trade name Colocasia Fuchsia Pink is not currently recognised as a formally registered cultivar in botanical literature. However, it is widely understood in cultivation as a variegated form of 'Pharaoh's Mask', sharing its distinctive raised venation and bold architectural foliage while exhibiting the striking pink variegation visible in this selection.
An interesting characteristic of many Colocasia species is their ability to produce guttation. During periods of abundant soil moisture, specialised pores near the leaf margins release tiny droplets of water, a completely natural process that is often mistaken for morning dew. This adaptation helps regulate internal water pressure and reflects the plant's affinity for consistently moist growing conditions.
Growing Information
Like most elephant ear plants, Colocasia Fuchsia Pink thrives in bright, indirect light or gentle morning sun, where its colourful foliage develops beautifully without unnecessary stress. It appreciates consistently moist, well-drained growing media and rewards regular watering with vigorous growth throughout the warm season. Warm temperatures and moderate to high humidity encourage lush foliage, although established plants adapt well to typical indoor environments when provided with stable conditions and good air circulation.
Bring a Living Work of Art Home
With its extraordinary combination of sculptural foliage, dramatic venation, and vibrant pink variegation, Colocasia Fuchsia Pink is far more than an ornamental foliage plant—it is a true conversation piece for collectors who appreciate exceptional tropical plants. Plant Care
-
Light
Colocasias thrive in bright light and can tolerate several hours of direct morning or late afternoon sun. In cooler climates, full sun encourages vigorous growth and larger leaves, while in hotter regions, light afternoon shade helps prevent leaf scorch. For light colored variegation varieties, they thrive in partial shade and harsh direct sunlight may burn the leaves.
-
Temperature
Ideal temperatures range from 20–32°C (68–90°F). Growth slows significantly below 15°C (59°F), and frost can damage or kill the foliage. In cooler climates, tubers can be lifted and stored over winter.
-
Water
Colocasias are moisture-loving plants that perform best in consistently damp soil. Unlike many aroids, they tolerate wet conditions exceptionally well and can even be grown in shallow water or along pond edges. Never allow the potting mix to dry out completely during the growing season.
-
Humidity
Although Colocasias appreciate high humidity, they are more adaptable than many tropical plants. A humidity level of 50–80% encourages lush, healthy foliage, but established plants generally tolerate average household humidity.
-
Potting Mix
Use a rich, moisture-retentive yet well-aerated potting mix. A blend containing coco coir or peat moss, compost, perlite, and pine bark provides excellent drainage while retaining the moisture Colocasias prefer. Ensure that your coco based products are free from tannin.
-
Fertilizer
Colocasias are heavy feeders during active growth. Apply a balanced liquid fertilizer every 2–3 weeks, or use slow-release 16-16-16 Osmocote according to the manufacturer's instructions to support continuous production of large, vibrant leaves.
