Colocasia Blue Velvet keeps to one reliable structure across every leaf photographed: a diagonal split between deep purple-black and green, with hot pink veins radiating from the centre and crossing both halves. The surface has a soft, matte finish and noticeably wavy, ruffled margins, a fabric-like quality not typical of the genus's usual glossy leaves.

The Same Split Every Leaf: Purple-Black on One Side, Green on the Other

Unlike the more visually variable Colocasia, Blue Velvet holds its pattern consistently: every leaf across all three real photos shows the same roughly diagonal division between a dark purple-black half and a green half, with the pink vein network running unbroken across the colour boundary rather than stopping at it. It's a plant you can buy expecting a specific, repeatable look.

A Cool Blue Undertone Under a Soft, Matte Surface

The dark half leans distinctly cool, a blue-violet black rather than the warmer, browner black seen on some other dark Colocasia. The surface itself is soft and matte rather than glossy, and the margins run genuinely wavy and ruffled along their whole length, giving the leaf real texture beyond just colour, part of where the "Velvet" name likely comes from.

A Descriptive Name Rather Than a Documented One

"Blue Velvet" doesn't come with a registered breeder or documented origin in the sources available to us, so we're treating it as a descriptive collector-market name rather than a verified cultivar history. It's an accurate one, though: the blue undertone and matte, velvet-like surface are both directly confirmed against this plant's own photos. Species-wise it's Colocasia esculenta, the same taro grown across tropical Asia and the Pacific.

Light Deepens the Purple, Shade Favours the Green

Bright, indirect light tends to intensify the purple-black half and sharpen the vein contrast; lower light lets the green half dominate more of the leaf. Consistent moisture, warmth, and humidity round out standard Colocasia care, nothing unusual beyond the light response.

Ships as a Cutting, Ruffled Margins Develop as It Grows

This cutting ships with bulb and petiole intact, leaves removed for transit and the bulb wrapped in moist sphagnum moss, rather than as the full leafed plant shown in these photos. The wavy, ruffled margin shown here tends to become more pronounced as the plant matures past its first few leaves.

Add Colocasia Blue Velvet to your collection for a reliably patterned, cool-toned Colocasia with a genuinely soft, matte finish, grown and shipped from ThaiFusion Botanica in Thailand.

Shipping

We ship our plants with free Phytosanitary Certificate via the national postal services, Dragon Courier and courier companies such as DHL and UPS. Some countries require an import permit.

Please refer to our Delivery & Packaging page for more details. We do not ship on public holidays in the Kingdom of Thailand.

Packaging

We ship our tissue culture plants in foam box lined with insulating material to minimize thermal shock.

Live plants are shipped in carton boxes with ventilation holes to prevent excessive moisture from building inside the parcel.

Please refer to our Delivery & Packaging page for more details. We do not recommend importing live plants if your area experiences temperature below -5 degree Celsius.

Disclaimer

Our photos are representative examples of the plants we offer. You will receive a healthy plant of similar size and quality unless the product description clearly states that the listing is for the exact plant shown.

For selected products, actual photos of the individual plant are provided. These listings will be clearly identified, and you will receive the exact plant pictured. The date the photos were taken will also be stated. If the photos are older, you are welcome to contact us to request updated images before purchasing.

Decorative pots and accessories shown in product photos are for display purposes only and are not included unless otherwise stated.

As our plants are living products, natural variation should be expected. Differences in size, leaf count, coloration, variegation, veining, and growth habit may occur depending on the season, age of the plant, environmental conditions, and normal biological variation. These natural differences are not considered defects and are not grounds for complaints, returns, or refunds.

All sales are final once plants have been shipped. Refunds or replacements for plants that arrive dead on arrival (DOA) are available only when the conditions outlined in our Returns, Refunds & Replacement Policy have been met. Please refer to that policy for full details.

  • Light

Colocasias thrive in bright light and can tolerate several hours of direct morning or late afternoon sun. In cooler climates, full sun encourages vigorous growth and larger leaves, while in hotter regions, light afternoon shade helps prevent leaf scorch. For light colored variegation varieties, they thrive in partial shade and harsh direct sunlight may burn the leaves.

  • Temperature

Ideal temperatures range from 20–32°C (68–90°F). Growth slows significantly below 15°C (59°F), and frost can damage or kill the foliage. In cooler climates, tubers can be lifted and stored over winter.

  • Water

Colocasias are moisture-loving plants that perform best in consistently damp soil. Unlike many aroids, they tolerate wet conditions exceptionally well and can even be grown in shallow water or along pond edges. Never allow the potting mix to dry out completely during the growing season.

  • Humidity

Although Colocasias appreciate high humidity, they are more adaptable than many tropical plants. A humidity level of 50–80% encourages lush, healthy foliage, but established plants generally tolerate average household humidity.

  • Potting Mix

Use a rich, moisture-retentive yet well-aerated potting mix. A blend containing coco coir or peat moss, compost, perlite, and pine bark provides excellent drainage while retaining the moisture Colocasias prefer. Ensure that your coco based products are free from tannin.

  • Fertilizer

Colocasias are heavy feeders during active growth. Apply a balanced liquid fertilizer every 2–3 weeks, or use slow-release 16-16-16 Osmocote according to the manufacturer's instructions to support continuous production of large, vibrant leaves.
