Bred, Not Just Found

Colocasia Blue Hawaii isn't a wild sport or an informally traded cultivar picked up in a nursery somewhere, it's a deliberately bred selection, patented and documented from the start. The plant carries large, medium-green, arrowhead-shaped leaves up to two feet long, with purple-tinted margins and veins running through the blade, supported on semi-glossy, burgundy-colored petioles. Like most Colocasia, the leaves are peltate, with the petiole attaching to the underside of the blade rather than its edge, and they tend to angle downward rather than sitting flat, giving a mature clump real visual weight. The leaf edges hold a slight, consistent wave rather than lying flat.

A Runner-Free Elephant Ear

Wild-type Colocasia esculenta spreads by sending out runners, colonizing new ground rather than staying put. Blue Hawaii was specifically bred to grow as a tidy, self-contained clump instead, without that runner habit, which makes it a more predictable choice for a defined garden bed or a container than many straight-species elephant ears.

The University of Hawaii Program Behind It

Blue Hawaii was bred by John Cho through the University of Hawaii's plant breeding program, part of the patented Royal Hawaiian® series, and is documented under US Plant Patent PP20003. Beyond the runner-free habit, the breeding work specifically targeted improved disease resistance and hardiness compared to older elephant ear selections, on top of the purple-veined, wavy-edged foliage the series is known for. At maturity, plants typically reach around three feet tall with a two-foot spread.

Straightforward, By Design

Give it warm, humid conditions and moist, well-draining soil; it suits a shaded border, a large container, or the edge of a water garden equally well. Because hardiness and disease resistance were bred into this selection deliberately, it tends to be a more forgiving elephant ear to grow than many of the more experimental hybrids in this catalog.

We ship our plants with free Phytosanitary Certificate via the national postal services, Dragon Courier and courier companies such as DHL and UPS. Some countries require an import permit.

Packaging

We ship our tissue culture plants in foam box lined with insulating material to minimize thermal shock.

Live plants are shipped in carton boxes with ventilation holes to prevent excessive moisture from building inside the parcel.

Plant Care

  • Light

    Colocasias thrive in bright light and can tolerate several hours of direct morning or late afternoon sun. In cooler climates, full sun encourages vigorous growth and larger leaves, while in hotter regions, light afternoon shade helps prevent leaf scorch. For light colored variegation varieties, they thrive in partial shade and harsh direct sunlight may burn the leaves.

  • Temperature

    Ideal temperatures range from 20–32°C (68–90°F). Growth slows significantly below 15°C (59°F), and frost can damage or kill the foliage. In cooler climates, tubers can be lifted and stored over winter.

  • Water

    Colocasias are moisture-loving plants that perform best in consistently damp soil. Unlike many aroids, they tolerate wet conditions exceptionally well and can even be grown in shallow water or along pond edges. Never allow the potting mix to dry out completely during the growing season.

  • Humidity

    Although Colocasias appreciate high humidity, they are more adaptable than many tropical plants. A humidity level of 50–80% encourages lush, healthy foliage, but established plants generally tolerate average household humidity.

  • Potting Mix

    Use a rich, moisture-retentive yet well-aerated potting mix. A blend containing coco coir or peat moss, compost, perlite, and pine bark provides excellent drainage while retaining the moisture Colocasias prefer. Ensure that your coco based products are free from tannin.

  • Fertilizer

    Colocasias are heavy feeders during active growth. Apply a balanced liquid fertilizer every 2–3 weeks, or use slow-release 16-16-16 Osmocote according to the manufacturer's instructions to support continuous production of large, vibrant leaves.
