Colocasia Black Jellyfish Batman is a fresh cutting of a dark Colocasia esculenta, sold under two trade names: Black Jellyfish and Batman. The trade describes its leaves as near-black. Neither name is a documented cultivar record, so this description sticks to the plant's look and care rather than a recorded origin.
A Near-Black Leaf With Its Own Sheen
The blade is dark, close to black, with a sheen that shows most clearly where the light falls across the surface. Against paler plants in a collection, a near-black leaf creates a strong contrast, and the dark tone gives the plant a heavier presence than most green elephant ears. It holds that look best when the light stays bright without being harsh.
Two Names, One Dark Colocasia
Trade listings use Black Jellyfish and Batman for the same dark selection, reflecting how elephant ears are often named by growers rather than registered by breeders. The name is a useful handle for finding the plant, but it does not tell you a history, and none is claimed here. What you can count on is the leaf itself: a dark, glossy blade on a Colocasia esculenta frame.
Light and Warmth for Dark Foliage
Colocasia do best in warm conditions, roughly 20 to 32 degrees C, and growth slows sharply below about 15 degrees. Bright light keeps the dark leaves vigorous. Strong midday sun is tolerated when the root zone stays wet, while deep shade makes the plant stretch and can dull the colour.
Wet Soil and a Light Feed
Colocasia are moisture-loving plants. Keep the soil consistently damp through the growing season and never let the mix dry out completely. A light liquid feed every few weeks during active growth supports the large leaves. The plant can also grow in shallow water or at the edge of a pond, which suits its natural habitat.
How This Cutting Ships
This is a fresh cutting, around 20 to 30 cm, with the bulb and petiole intact. The leaves are removed and the bulb is wrapped in fresh moist sphagnum moss. On arrival, pot the bulb with its top at or just below the surface and keep it warm and wet while the first leaf develops. Each cutting ships with a phytosanitary certificate from ThaiFusion Botanica in Thailand.

Our photos are representative examples of the plants we offer. You will receive a healthy plant of similar size and quality unless the product description clearly states that the listing is for the exact plant shown.
For selected products, actual photos of the individual plant are provided. These listings will be clearly identified, and you will receive the exact plant pictured. The date the photos were taken will also be stated. If the photos are older, you are welcome to contact us to request updated images before purchasing.
Decorative pots and accessories shown in product photos are for display purposes only and are not included unless otherwise stated.
As our plants are living products, natural variation should be expected. Differences in size, leaf count, coloration, variegation, veining, and growth habit may occur depending on the season, age of the plant, environmental conditions, and normal biological variation. These natural differences are not considered defects and are not grounds for complaints, returns, or refunds.
All sales are final once plants have been shipped. Refunds or replacements for plants that arrive dead on arrival (DOA) are available only when the conditions outlined in our Returns, Refunds & Replacement Policy have been met. Please refer to that policy for full details.

Plant Care
-
Light
Colocasias thrive in bright light and can tolerate several hours of direct morning or late afternoon sun. In cooler climates, full sun encourages vigorous growth and larger leaves, while in hotter regions, light afternoon shade helps prevent leaf scorch. For light colored variegation varieties, they thrive in partial shade and harsh direct sunlight may burn the leaves.
-
Temperature
Ideal temperatures range from 20–32°C (68–90°F). Growth slows significantly below 15°C (59°F), and frost can damage or kill the foliage. In cooler climates, tubers can be lifted and stored over winter.
-
Water
Colocasias are moisture-loving plants that perform best in consistently damp soil. Unlike many aroids, they tolerate wet conditions exceptionally well and can even be grown in shallow water or along pond edges. Never allow the potting mix to dry out completely during the growing season.
-
Humidity
Although Colocasias appreciate high humidity, they are more adaptable than many tropical plants. A humidity level of 50–80% encourages lush, healthy foliage, but established plants generally tolerate average household humidity.
-
Potting Mix
Use a rich, moisture-retentive yet well-aerated potting mix. A blend containing coco coir or peat moss, compost, perlite, and pine bark provides excellent drainage while retaining the moisture Colocasias prefer. Ensure that your coco based products are free from tannin.
-
Fertilizer
Colocasias are heavy feeders during active growth. Apply a balanced liquid fertilizer every 2–3 weeks, or use slow-release 16-16-16 Osmocote according to the manufacturer's instructions to support continuous production of large, vibrant leaves.
