Caladium Sunset Sky earns its name honestly. Each heart-shaped leaf runs a real color gradient rather than a fixed pattern: bright gold and chartreuse near the base, shifting into orange and red along the veins, and finishing in a deep maroon border at the leaf margin. Held up to the light, the thin, papery leaf blade turns almost translucent, letting that whole color range glow through at once rather than reading as flat, opaque color. It's a genuinely striking plant in a collection built mostly around greens and pinks.

What the Name Is Getting At

Most variegated Caladium show a color break, a patch of one color against another. Sunset Sky instead shows a continuous shift across the leaf, closer to watching a sky change color at dusk than looking at a patterned leaf. That gradient effect is harder to breed for and to photograph accurately than a sharp sectoral pattern, which is part of why it draws attention in a market where most collector Caladium lean on contrast rather than blend.

A Plant That Disappears on Purpose

Caladium as a genus is native to the wet tropical forests of Central and South America, particularly Brazil and the Amazon basin, where most species grow in shaded, humid understory conditions. Almost all ornamental Caladium in cultivation, Sunset Sky included, descend from Caladium bicolor. One detail worth knowing before you buy: Caladium is a tuberous geophyte, meaning it stores itself underground and goes fully dormant, losing all its leaves, once the growing season ends. That's not a sign of a dying plant; it's normal biology, and the tuber pushes out new leaves again once conditions warm back up.

Keeping the Color Going

Give it bright, indirect light rather than direct sun; the wild species grows in shaded forest understory, and Caladium foliage can scorch or fade under strong direct light. Keep the growing medium consistently moist and warm during active growth, and expect the plant to die back and rest once temperatures cool or its natural cycle runs its course. This is normal and not a reason to discard it.
