Hold a mature leaf of this plant up to the light and the pattern reveals itself in full: deep, glossy near-black green across the upper blade, laced with bold pale venation, warming into a striking gold-yellow wash toward the base. This is the 'Aurea' form of Alocasia watsoniana, one of the larger-leaved species in the watsoniana/longiloba group, grown here as a tissue-culture plantlet rather than a field division.

Why Collectors Seek It Out

Watsoniana is prized for its size and presence: elongated, arrow-shaped leaves held upright on long petioles, with a texture and venation pattern that reads as almost hand-painted. The Aurea form adds a second layer of interest on top of that architecture, a genuine two-tone leaf that most Alocasia in cultivation don't show. It rewards patience: a young plantlet takes real time and consistent care to reach the leaf size and color contrast shown in the reference photo, but the payoff is a specimen plant that holds a room on its own.

Botanical Background

Alocasia is a genus of rainforest understory aroids native across tropical and subtropical Asia, from India through Southeast Asia and into the Pacific. Species in the watsoniana/longiloba complex are typically found growing low to the forest floor in constant humidity and dappled light, which shapes the large, thin-textured leaf this group is known for. As with most Alocasia, the sap contains calcium oxalate crystals and should be kept away from pets and children.

Growing Conditions

Give it bright, indirect light, comparable to a spot a few feet back from an east- or west-facing window, with warmth between 18-27C (65-80F) and no cold drafts. Use a well-draining, chunky aroid mix, let the top of the medium dry slightly between waterings, and keep humidity above 60% where possible, a covered setup or grow cabinet will noticeably improve leaf size and color development.

Tissue Culture Plantlet

This listing is a laboratory-propagated tissue culture plantlet, grown from sterile in-vitro culture rather than a cutting or division, which means a clean root system from the outset and no pests or pathogens traveling with the plant. What you receive is a small, actively growing plantlet in nutrient gel, not the pictured adult plant, but it carries the same genetics and will develop the same leaf pattern and coloring shown in the reference photo as it matures.

Plant Care

  • Light

    Alocasias thrive in bright, indirect light. A position near an east- or west-facing window is ideal, where they receive plenty of filtered sunlight throughout the day. Avoid prolonged direct afternoon sun, which may scorch the foliage, while insufficient light can lead to slower growth and smaller leaves.

  • Temperature

    Alocasias perform best in temperatures between 20–30°C (68–86°F). Avoid prolonged exposure below 15°C (59°F), as cold temperatures can slow growth and damage foliage.

  • Water

    Keep the growing medium consistently moist but never waterlogged. Water thoroughly when the top 2–3 cm (1 inch) of the substrate begins to dry. Reduce watering slightly during cooler months while preventing the soil from completely drying out.

  • Humidity

    Alocasias are tropical plants that flourish in moderate to high humidity. Aim for 60–80% humidity for vigorous growth and larger foliage. In drier environments, consider using a humidifier or placing the plant near other tropical plants to create a more humid microclimate.

  • Potting Mix

    Use a chunky, well-draining aroid mix that provides excellent aeration while retaining adequate moisture. A blend containing coco coir or peat, orchid bark, perlite, and pumice works exceptionally well.

  • Fertilizer

    Feed every 2–4 weeks during active growth with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Reduce feeding during winter when growth naturally slows.
