Alocasia Regal Shield Aurea Variegated pairs the broad, shield-shaped leaf of a patented hybrid with bright yellow-green sectoral variegation, the gold sitting in irregular blocks and marbled patches rather than a fixed pattern.
A Documented 'Hail Mary' Cross, This Time in Gold
The base hybrid, Alocasia 'Regal Shields', is a real US-patented plant (PP27050), bred by LariAnn Garner of Aroidia Research from a 2007 cross between Alocasia odora and Alocasia reginula 'Black Velvet', patented in 2016. Garner herself has described the cross as a 'Hail Mary' given how mismatched the two parent species are. This Aurea form is a separate variegated sport of that same documented hybrid, running gold and yellow-green instead of white.
Broad and Shield-Shaped at Maturity, Still Finding Its Shape Now
The straight Regal Shields cultivar is known for large, matte, shield-shaped leaves on a sturdy, upright plant. The bareroot division photographed here shows smaller, narrower leaves with fine yellow-green speckled marbling, closer to how the plant looks early on; the adult plant sample shows the broader shield shape and bolder gold sectoring this variegation develops into with size.
An Unpatented Sport of a Patented Parent
The Aurea variegation itself isn't separately patented or formally documented, it's an unofficial sport that arose and was propagated within the trade on top of a hybrid that is. We're keeping that distinction clear: the parent plant's breeding history is verified, the variegated sport's own origin isn't.
Bright Light, Chunky Mix, No Cold Drafts
Give it bright, indirect light, warmth between 18 and 27°C (65-80°F), and no cold drafts. A well-draining, chunky aroid mix and humidity above 60% suit it; a covered setup or grow cabinet will noticeably improve leaf size and how clearly the gold shows.
Rooted and Leafed, Not a Plantlet
This listing ships as a bareroot division, roots intact and soil removed for transit, sized to fit a 3-inch pot, a step past a tissue culture plantlet since the leaves are already open and coloured. The mature specimen in the adult plant sample photo is what it can grow toward, not what ships.
