Alocasia Black Velvet Albo/Pink Variegated (3" Bareroot)

Alocasia Black Velvet Albo/Pink Variegated pairs the near-black, velvet-textured leaf of Alocasia reginula with striking cream-white and pink sectoral variegation, some leaves splitting between solid dark velvet and pale cream, others washed almost entirely in soft pink. The pale midrib venation stands out sharply against the dark base color, which is what makes the straight form so collectible on its own before variegation is even added.

Alocasia reginula is already prized as one of the darkest, most velvety leaf textures in the genus despite its compact, dwarf growth habit that suits small spaces and shelf collections. The Albo/Pink Variegated line adds genuine, unstable variegation on top of that near-black base, so no two plants show quite the same balance of dark velvet to cream or pink. Botanical Background

Alocasia reginula is native to Borneo, growing as a small understory rhizomatous herb in humid, shaded forest conditions. Its common name, Black Velvet, refers to the dark, almost black leaf surface with a distinctive matte, velvety texture and pale silvery-green venation. Variegated sports carrying white and pink sectors have become increasingly sought after as tissue culture and division propagation of aroids has expanded over the last decade. As with other Alocasia, the sap contains calcium oxalate crystals and should be kept away from pets and children.

Growing Conditions

Give it bright, indirect light, similar to a spot a few feet back from an east- or west-facing window, with warmth between 18-27C (65-80F) and no cold drafts. Use a well-draining, chunky aroid mix, let the top of the medium dry slightly between waterings, and keep humidity above 60% where possible, a covered setup or grow cabinet will noticeably improve leaf size and variegation clarity. Being a smaller-growing Alocasia, it does well in modest pot sizes and doesn't need the floor space some of its larger relatives do.
