Alocasia azlanii Pink/Albo Variegated pairs one of the rarest Alocasia species in cultivation with a dramatic colour break: white sectoring at the tissue-culture stage, developing toward the hot pink and near-black colouring shown in the adult plant sample.
A Species Known From a Single Population in Brunei
Alocasia azlanii is a properly described, Kew-recognised species (K.M.Wong & P.C.Boyce), documented from a single known population in the Tutong district of Brunei, on the island of Borneo. That's a genuinely narrow native range, real rarity backed by a source rather than a marketing claim. In its standard form the species carries a thick, leathery, glossy leaf with a coppery-purple to copper-green upper surface, a pale green underside, and prominent magenta veins running along the leaf margin, distinctive enough to separate it from the closely related Alocasia beccarii.
White at First, Then a Shift Toward Hot Pink
The tissue culture plantlets photographed here show a clean white sectoral variegation over dark green, a strong contrast even at this early stage. The adult plant sample tells a different part of the story: a mature leaf running hot pink with near-black patching, considerably more dramatic than the plantlet stage suggests. Expect the colour to develop and shift as the plant matures rather than staying fixed at what ships.
The Species' Own Magenta Veins, Pushed Further by This Sport
The straight species is already known for prominent magenta intramarginal veining, a real identifying trait confirmed independently of this particular sport. This Pink/Albo variegated form appears to push that same pink pigment further, into the leaf blade itself rather than confining it to the veins, on top of the white sectoring.
Bright, Humid, and Out of Direct Sun
Give it bright, indirect light, high humidity, and warmth; white and pink tissue both carry little to no chlorophyll, so harsh direct sun will scorch these sections faster than it would a plain green leaf. Keep the substrate chunky and well-draining, evenly moist rather than wet.
A Sterile Plantlet From a Genuinely Rare Species
This plantlet is produced through tissue culture, propagated in a sterile lab environment, a meaningful way to make a species known from one wild population available without collecting more material from it. Expect the leaf to start close to the white-sectored plantlet stage shown here and shift toward the pink adult colouring over time.
Add Alocasia azlanii Pink/Albo Variegated to your collection for a rare, narrowly endemic species carrying a genuinely dramatic colour break, grown from culture and shipped from ThaiFusion Botanica in Thailand.
